The Moment

Lightbulb at sunset

When was your moment?

I speak so much on clarity and perspective, that I sometimes forget what things were like before I began to have a clear vision for my life. Every leader needs this. A leader without a defining moment of clarity in their life is like a spinning compass. They have no true direction and move forward based on the way the wind is blowing in the moment. Their organizations wander and sputter and never seem to make any real progress. It’s a sad existence for far too many…

But you ask, what is “the moment?”

The moment may look a little different for each individual, but at its core, it is the inflection point in your life when everything you thought you knew about existence and the universe becomes insignificant and you see life for the first time for what it really is. If you’ve ever experienced “love at first sight,” you might get a sense of what I’m talking about. You walk into a room and behold a picture of beauty that captivates your soul. Your worries and anxiety seem to melt away and your entire existence and reason for living coalesces on the face of a complete stranger. Someone you have never met but would give all you own to share the next moments of your life with them.

I mean we are talking powerful stuff. I am talking about that moment in your life when you understand why you are called to lead. When you knew without any doubts that you finally grabbed hold of something worth having, and you couldn’t wait to share it with the rest of the world. It is your reason for leading and your reason for living. It will carry you through the hard times and motivate you to continue when others would walk away.

Take five minutes and consider: When was my moment? Am I trying to lead based on my own vague notions of leadership from a book, or do I know in my soul why I lead?

Share your moment with someone today. Tell the story of why you lead and memorialize the moment when you finally saw the path for the vision.
