Leaders unmasking

Are you afraid of being found out?

Do you ever fear that you’ll be exposed as a leadership fraud?

I was out on a walk recently, and this question hit me: Does the way I live my life validate my message, or am I more likely to be exposed as a leadership fraud? We all say a lot of things. We talk a big game. We make darn sure everyone sees only our best side; however, if you are secretly worried about being exposed as a fraud, you might think that the best approach would be to never challenge anyone to aspire to anything greater than that which you can comfortably live up to as the leader. But that isn’t leadership; that’s called sandbagging.

Real leadership takes place when you are courageous enough to create a bold vision and then inspire others to achieve that vision together. The fake leader, on the other hand, will give the impression to everyone that they have already “arrived” through their powerful speeches, pretension, and even false modesty. It as if to say, “I’ve already got this figured out, and I need you to get your life up to my level.” I’ve seen a lot of these types of leaders inspire thousands of followers, only to be brought down by scandal and failure in their personal lives. You see, they were never “all-in” on their own vision, believing instead that the standard was only for others to pursue.

Today is a simple reminder that you must be careful to never sell a vision that you are not committed to following in every part of your own life. You may ask, isn’t that asking a lot? Of course it is, that’s why this journey is only for those brave enough to commit the entirety of their life to the vision…

This is so true even in our household. Doing what we ask for then to do is eventually a…fraud. Easier to apply at work, when it succeeds in our lives.
